Great Falls

I came home from orchestra practice one day to find Graton and the girls packed up and ready for a picnic to Great Falls. Graton had heard of this national park, and wanted to explore it.

The falls were massive! We all enjoyed the great view and watching the few brave kayakers who navigated them.

Graton had heard of the "Junior Ranger" program, and suggested Audrey try it. We all enjoyed going on the hikes and learning the history of the park. George Washington had hoped to make the Potomac River an "Erie Canal" and went into business building locks so cargo could be shipped around these Falls. It never was a great success, and the railroads soon replaced the canal project.

Later, the park became a hot spot in the early 20th century, when it was privately owned and featured a live band, carousel, and lamplit walk through "lovers lane" (a forest trail). DC residents would take the train on the weekends to enjoy a romantic evening here. As we walked through the lovely paths, we wished we could visit that bygone era, but had to be content to imagine it.

Audrey was diligent in completing the workbook, even insisting on doing all the writing herself. It took two visits, but finally she completed it and earned her junior ranger badge, which she has worn every day since.
