New Years' day promised an overcast day in the 50s After weeks of freezing winds, that sounded positively balmy! We had heard that it was so cold, the swans were hiding their heads in the water, so we set off to find some. We chose a nature preserve, about an hour away in Maryland, and set out to explore.
To get there, we had to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which is huge, and felt like we were literally driving across the water
We found an easy trail that took us to the water, to search for our swans. We met some fellow hikers who had just seen a whole flock. By the time we got there, there were only two swimming away, but it was still fun to watch them.
On the way back, we hiked through cornfields. We were reading the "Little House" series, so it was fun to imagine what the Laura's prairies may have looked like. Of course our "prairies" were lined with majestic trees, so they weren't the most authentic.
Those fields were a welcome respite for Audrey from a cold, cooped up winter. She ran and ran.
Dear Spring,
Please come soon.
Sincerely,
The Gathrights
